The Graduate School Daze

In a world where science dominates higher education, one man will embark on a journey to study film. A hero will rise. An empire will fall. A bunch of movies will be learned about.

What can I say? I understand Hitler, but I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely. But I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. He’s not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him, and I sympathize with him a little bit. But come on, I’m not for the Second World War, and I’m not against Jews. I am very much for Jews. No, not too much, because Israel is a pain in the ass.

Director Lars von Trier, sparking controversy at a Cannes press conference for his latest film, Melancholia.

Von Trier prefaced his rambling remarks (which were in response to a question about his German roots) by saying that he “really wanted to be a Jew,” until he found out he “was really a Nazi, because, you know, my family was German, which also gave me some pleasure.”

[speakeasy.]

UPDATE: Von Trier issued a formal apology, saying “I am not anti-semitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi.” Duly noted.

Wow.  So I guess we can file this in the “Just in case we needed further evidence that Lars Von Trier is an incompetent jackass with too much time on his hands” file.  Also, aren’t cover-all apologies just awesome?

I’ll be presenting at NYU’s conference on Music and the Moving Image this weekend.  I am definitely looking forward to getting to seeing Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3-D, being in the East Village just a few short days before Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday, and seeing where I could’ve gone to school for a scant fifty Gs plus room and board.  Also looking forward to sitting on a train for 24 hours to get there and back.  Good times.

Side note: my New Year’s resolution is to actually get this tumblr thing back up and running on a regular basis over the summer.  Better late than never, amirite?
